Educational Objectives

Based on the educational goals of Osaka University and the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, the Department of Computer Science aims to develop human resources with a wide range of knowledge and skills, from basic to applied, in the field of information science and technology, which are essential for realizing a knowledge-based society with information technology at its core. Based on knowledge and skills in computer principles, mathematical fundamentals, algorithms and data structures, the department educates students to make advanced use of hardware and software, to deepen theories in the field of computer science, or to design, develop and utilize information systems useful to society. Through this type of education, the program aims to provide graduates with the ability to work at the forefront of the world as engineers, researchers, and educators in the field of information science and technology in the future.

Through coursework and research activities, we aim to develop human resources with cutting-edge and highly specialized knowledge and skills in so-called computer science, including algorithms, software, and computer applications.

Through exercises, seminar courses, and research guidance, we aim to develop human resources with advanced design skills to create new academic fields and new social values, and with research skills to identify new issues in the field of computer science and to lead them to solutions from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Through coursework and research guidance, we aim to develop human resources who can acquire leadership skills to lead many engineers and researchers in Japan and abroad from a global perspective, and who can make full use of these skills to become active globally with high ethical standards and lead world-class research and development projects and business projects in the future. Our goal is to develop human resources who are capable of leading world-class research and development projects and business projects in the future.

Degree Awarding Policy (Diploma Policy)

Under the Diploma Policy of Osaka University and the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, the Master's Course and Doctoral Course of the Department of Computer Science will award a Master's degree (in Information Science, Science or Engineering) to students who have earned the prescribed credits through systematic coursework and submitted a thesis prepared under the necessary research guidance and who meet the requirements as follows Master's degree (Information Science, Science or Engineering) is awarded in the Master's program, and Doctoral degree (Information Science, Science or Engineering) is awarded in the Doctoral program.

・The doctoral dissertation makes an important contribution to the academic field of computer science in terms of academic theory and its applications, such as the discovery of unknown phenomena and things; the construction and development of new theories; the development, invention, and application of new technologies, instruments, methods, and algorithms; and the submission of new academic concepts.

Under the curriculum policy of Osaka University and the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, the Master's and Doctoral Programs of the Department of Computer Science are organized as follows.

Master's degree program

Principles of Curriculum Design

In the Master's Course in Computer Science, in addition to the basic courses for acquiring expertise in each major, students are required to take courses that cover the important fields of computer science in the surrounding areas. In addition to the basic courses to acquire expertise in each major, the department also offers cross-major boundary courses that cover all important fields in the surrounding areas. In addition, cross-disciplinary fusion courses, special lecture courses covering the latest technological trends with invited lecturers from industry and other external sources, internship courses at domestic and overseas companies and research institutions, project-based seminars, and other courses that foster practical skills are offered. In addition, courses from other majors and graduate schools are offered for advanced education. To cultivate an international mindset, we offer overseas internship courses and seminar courses that enable students to understand cutting-edge research from around the world. By offering such advanced courses related to computer science that cultivate specialized education, advanced education, and internationality, and by providing excellent research guidance, we enable students to acquire the knowledge and skills stated in the Diploma Policy.

Contents and Methods of Education

The program is designed to help students acquire the knowledge and skills needed to become advanced engineers and researchers through lectures in basic courses, interdisciplinary courses, cross-disciplinary courses, special lectures, internships, project-based exercises and seminars that require students to study on their own initiative, and research guidance. In addition, the program is designed to enable students to acquire a wide range of knowledge that meets the diverse needs of society.

In the basic courses for the major, students will acquire the basic knowledge and skills to deeply explore computer hardware, software, and the effective use of computers, from the basics to applications in a longitudinal manner.

In special lecture courses, students acquire the ability to flexibly apply their knowledge and skills to real problems in society and to design, construct, and operate real systems.

In the Advanced International Education, Internship, and Project-based Seminar courses, students will cultivate an international perspective and acquire the ability to carry out research and development projects on information and communication systems in collaboration with many people in Japan and overseas.

In computer science research, students receive research guidance so that they can acquire the ability to understand and judge ethical issues surrounding information science and assume the duties and responsibilities of researchers and engineers in society.

The degree of achievement of the learning objectives stated in the syllabus will be rigorously evaluated using appropriate methods, such as written examinations and report assignments.

Doctoral degree program

Principles of Curriculum Design

In the doctoral program of the Department of Computer Science, in addition to specialized courses that enable students to acquire cutting-edge science and technology, internship courses at domestic and overseas companies and research institutes are offered to deepen advanced specialized knowledge in the field of computer science into cutting-edge academic knowledge. The program also includes internship courses at domestic and overseas companies and research institutes. To cultivate an international mindset, the program includes overseas internship courses and seminar courses that enable students to understand cutting-edge research from around the world. By offering such advanced courses in information science and technology that cultivate culture, design skills, and internationality, and by providing excellent research guidance, we enable students to acquire the academic knowledge and research skills stated in the Diploma Policy.

Contents and Methods of Education

Academic Major education subjects are offered as lectures or seminars, depending on the nature of study. Internship-based subjects are designed to gain work experience and involve preparatory study and post-internship presentation. Seminar-based subjects especially require student-initiated learning. These subjects guide students to foster the ability to create new academic value, and train individuals who can use the academic value to create new social value.

In specialized courses, students acquire advanced specialized knowledge and skills in the field of computer science.

Students will acquire knowledge and skills in the fields of computer science, computer engineering, and computer science-related fields in the specialized courses.

In internship courses, project-based seminars, and advanced international education courses, students will acquire the leadership skills to lead many engineers and researchers in Japan and overseas from a global perspective, and the knowledge and skills to carry out R&D and business projects in information and communication systems in collaboration with many people in Japan and overseas, and to apply their deep academic knowledge of computer science in a flexible and applied manner. Students will also acquire the ability to flexibly apply their deep knowledge of computer science by working with many people in Japan and abroad to carry out research and development projects and business projects in information and communication systems.

Through research guidance, students will deepen their specialized knowledge into cutting-edge academic knowledge, acquire leadership skills, the ability to carry out research and development projects, and the ability to understand and judge ethical issues related to information science, and acquire the ability to carry out research as an independent researcher.

The degree of achievement of the learning objectives stated in the syllabus is rigorously evaluated using appropriate methods, such as written examinations and report assignments.

In addition, we have established a special course for international students to study in English through the Master's and Doctoral Programs. Non-international students are also able to take courses in this course to cultivate their international mindset.
Students with extremely excellent grades can complete the course with a shortened period of study upon deliberation by the faculty committee.
