Overview

The Purpose and Concept

The Graduate School of Information Science of Osaka University was made by reorganizing and restructuring education and research organizations with relevance to information and network technology that existed within the Graduate School of Engineering , Graduate School of Engineering Science, Graduate School of Science in a disperse manner, and it is intended to form a system to build up an advanced education and research study base, deploy new fields of the information science and promote the deepening and enhancement of these studies.

Information related field has grown significantly in the area of information processing technologies for over half a century since the mid-1900s. A new specific academic discipline has been built from scientific and technologic aspects, by the development of technologies, from hardware to software and to contents, and their systematization, and furthermore by inheriting reusable abstract knowledge. Within the construction of this academic discipline, this field has created excellent pioneering study results and produced preeminent human resources, from the standpoint of the electronics and communications engineering, information engineering, systems science and information systems engineering.

Nevertheless, as education and research organizations with relevance to information of Osaka University had a dispersed form by each major, they were facing plights within the framework of specialties based on the traditional disciplines, such as following:

1. Difficulty to construct a system to promote interdisciplinary research, due to specialty constraints
2. The lack of new fields related to Information Technology
3. The lack of flexibility towards new development of information science technologies

The necessity of a new organization to overcome this situation has been pointed out strongly from both inside and outside our university.

In these conditions, the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology was intended as an entity to realize the integration and consolidation of education and research in relevant fields, by the reorganization and restructuring of the education and research organizations that were dispersed into each major, aiming to further deepening of the development of information science and technology and to improve the efficiency of education and research, on the purpose to realize the pioneering and development of new disciplines of the information science technology, by a selective organizational expansion of new fields. This will allow the provision of informational science technologies to contribute significantly to the advanced information society, together with the great acceleration of the development of related fields by building up a comprehensive information-related academic system.
